The Bear Scouts

I Went Searching for this Childhood Favorite
This tale of Papa Bear's prideful camping advice that ALWAYS turns out wrong is a classic. I LOVED this book when I was young, and indeed I still do! I never mind reading it to my 3 year old daughter. We quote the line "Your stew is stewing well, but doesn't it have a funny smell?" to each other as an inside joke.

The Bear Scouts leave on a camping adventure, but at the last minute Papa Bear insists on going to "help out". His son and the other scouts always use their Bear Scout Guide, and always have success. But Dad ties his own knot which fails, makes stew of roots that tastes awful but then gladly devours the fish the scouts catch, and so forth. The rhyme is fun and memorable, the illustrations are captivating, and I would recommend it to anyone!

A Crowd Pleaser for Berenstain Bear Fans
Your child will love Papa Bear's misadventures as he attempts to teach the Bear Scouts the "correct" way to conquer the out-of-doors. Luckily, the Bear Scouts also have their bear scout manual along.

The illustrations (especially of Papa Bear "experiencing" the outdoors) and rhyming words will pull in your preschool or early school age child, and they will request this book again and again. This is a Berenstain Bear classic!

Great advice
I liked the way this guide was set up--it was very clear and informative and easy to work my way through. I especially liked the cheat sheet up front that summarized some key points, like strengths of Bear, recruiter advice, insider quotes and salary ranges. I'm now gonna buy a few other guides from WF to help me along with my job hunt and interview research. Cheers!

Like actually being there!
This guide was great! I felt like I had the benefit of having interviewed dozens of people from the company, without actually having to do the work. I had my eye on Bear Stearns before, but now I know for sure it's where I want to be!

Recommended For All Ages
I chose to read this book because I am friends with the author's son. I'm happy I chose to do so despite the book being written for more of a younger audience. Its vivid descriptions allowed me to picture the entire book as i was reading it. I had no trouble reading through the book's entirety in one sitting. Every stage of the book is interesting and kept me wanting to continue reading. I recommend this book for people of all ages to read and to all future writers who need a solid example of the way a book should be written.

" BEAR VALLEY CHARLIE"
This is an excellent children's book in that it is fast moving, exciting and teaches profound lessons in a boy's world. I believe girls will like the book as well. The character of Mary Kate is fiercely independent and girls will love her. The three toed Grizzly is terrifying as it searches for the puppy Bear Valley Charlie,so named for it's first encounter with the giant bear. Hugh and Joseph, twelve year olds in New Mexico who are trying to save a herd of wild mustangs from cowboys who want to find and destroy them. The boy's search for the mustangs while keeping away from the cowboys and the endurance required of them is impressive. I found it a very enjoyable and easy read.

The Bear Who Didn't Like Honey

The Bear Who Didn't Like Honey
This lovely picture book is beautifully illustrated and its prose is poetic. Little children can relate to this delightful tale of a young bear cub fearful of the river, nightime darkness, and honey bees. But, instead of ackowledging his fear, he just claims not to like honey and such. No one's fooled: his brothers and sisters call him "scaredy bear." In a moment of crisis, he overcomes his fear of heights to save a younger cub. When told how brave he is, he finally acknowledges how afraid he was..the first step toward dealing with his phobias.

Courage and Fears for Early Readers
What a wonderful book to teach your children about courage. The author handles the concept of bravery while being afraid in a way all youngsters can understand. The text is lyrical to read aloud and simple enough for young readers/listeners to remember. The illustrations are both beautiful and endearing. A gem.

The Bear Who Wanted to Be a Bear

No one at the new factory believes the bear is a bear
The previous reviewer has gotten a few details of the story wrong - who wouldn't, remembering a childhood favorite. In this picture book translation from German, a bear wakes up from his winter's nap to find his forest has been razed. He meets a man from the newly built factory, who puts him to work there. By winter, he realizes where he really belongs. Although originally published in 1976, the book's design gives it a very contemporary look; sort of an Anthony Browne meets Chris Van Allsburg, with dark, detailed art and text boxes. Hey, you publishers out there - get this book back in print! Patti McLaughlin, Children's Librarian, The Free Library of Philadelphia

This book is my favorite book ever!
I have been unable to locate "The Bear Who Wanted To Be A Bear" anywhere! The last time I read this story was about 20 years ago. My family and I still talk about it fondly and with many happy memories.

The book is about a bear who is lost and confused and not sure what his calling in life is. He tries to find himself by taking on a variety of jobs such as joining a circus, working in a factory...

Eventually, he listens to his heart and realizes who he is and what he needs and wants to do.

The illustrations for this book have a very playful and animated 70's style. One particular page I remember quite vividly as do my siblings is where the bear takes a job in a factory. The illustration displays the inside of a factory filled with a twisted maze of foreign equipment made of pipes, wires and gadgets. My brother, sister and I would take turns making the sound effects for each piece of equipment and imagining how the machines operated.

Sometimes I wonder if the books I loved as a child were great because of the actual story or because of the wonderful memories I have with my family reading them to me. Either way, this book is sure to do the same for others.

Two little thumbs up
My son is 2 yrs. old. He absolutely loved this book. He carried it around for days. Even though it says the reading level is higher we can make it all the way through it at least once. The pages are very brightly colored and inviting. My son has a blast trying to find all the flaps to lift.

Bear's Berry Christmas (Bear in the Big Blue House)
Our 2 year old niece is getting Bear's Berry Christmas book from us this Christmas. Bear and his friends are already favorites of hers, and this book brings a seasonal adventure to life for her to learn and enjoy. She loves interactive books and will eagerly anticipate what she will find underneath each flap -- and this book contains 52 flaps! It combines holiday traditions with a lesson of the real spirit of Christmas. Bear, Teelo, Ojo, Pip & Pop decorate the tree, wrap gifts, bake cookies and share the importance of spending time with old friends and giving to others. I don't know if a 2 year old will get all of the lessons out of this book, but I do know that Kelsey will read it over and over and each time learn something new. This is a great interactive book with sturdy cardboard pages to last for years to come.

What's in Bear's Big Blue House?
What a wonderful book for young readers just learning to read. Within this book you take a tour through Bear's house exploring room by room naming different items in each room. My 11 month old daughter has fun trying to find "Bear's" friends in each room. The words in the book are so simple to read and learn. The illustrations that they have chosen for each word are excellent and very clear for the reader to understand what the item(word) is. When you read this book you start in the kitchen and go all the way to the attic to see Luna.

After you have read this book, you can ask your child where items are located in Bear's house. You can even ask them if you have any of the same items in your own home as Bear does. You can also ask your child, how many of a certain item are in Bear's house. Not only does this book teach the reader words it can also help them count, along with helping them with their memory skills.

I can hardly wait for my daughter to get older so that we can read this together. However, we have fun looking at the pictures, and having me read the words to her for right now. We strongly recommend this book for any "Bear" fan or any young reader.

Bear-y easy to read fun!
Our daughter received this book several months ago and it is one of her favorites. At 19 months she enjoys pointing to the pictures and being able to identify them herself.

In this Bear book, we are taken on a tour of the Big Blue House by Bear himself. As we travel from room to room, different simple to read words can be found by objects that are very ordinary.

We have read this book on many occasions now and it always amazes me what my daughter picks up on after we read it. I highly recommend this book for the Bear fan in your life!

Bears Make Rock Soup: And Other Stories
Published in School & Library Binding by Childrens Book Press (September, 2002)
Authors: Liselotte Erdrich, Lisa Fifield, Lise Erdrich, and Louise Erdrich
Average review score:

Stories of the time when animals spoke to people in dreams
"Bears Make Soup and Other Stories" might seem like a collection of ancient Native American stories but this is actually a rather unique collection of new tales reflecting the time when people and animals spoke to each other in dreams. Artist Lisa Fifield, a watercolorist and quilt maker enrolled in the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, created 14 paintings focusing on animals that still live on the plains and in the woodlands of North America, such as black bears, deer, moose, loons, and crows. Then writer Lisa Erdrich, who is enrolled in the Turlte Mountain Band of Plains Ojibway wrote stories to bring the pictures to life. The stories are organized by animals, so that you start with several stories about bears, including "The Bears that Couldn't Hibernate" nd the title story, then move on to the other species of animals. The points made by the stories are usually subtle, and reflect the sense of harmony between living things as much as anything else. The stories show animals and people teaching and learning from one another, as well as helping each other in times of need. I can see a teacher showing a class one of these paintings, such as The Naming Ceremony or Forest of the Deer Spirits, and having students come up with their own stories before sharing the one with the book. It would interesting to see if the students would catch on to the spirit of these stories if they did this a few time and became better able to anticipate what Erdich came up with from Fifield's artwork. "Bears Make Rock Soup and Other Stories" is a simple but elegant collection of stories.

With distinctive and colorful art
Bears Make Rock Soup And Other Stories is a highly recommended children's picture book of original tales written by Lise Erdrich (a member of the Turtle Mountain and of Plains Ojibway) and illustrated with paintings by water colorist Lisa Fifield (member of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin). The distinctive and colorful art wonderfully complements the brief, unique, fairytale-like narratives of creatures of the earth and sky.

Worthwhile
This is the teddy bear making book that I always have out and refer to. Her bear faces are adorable and she shows you how to make all of the detail in the faces. Great color pictures, very detail instructions.

The best teddybear-book I have ever seen
Absolutelly THE best book!! I started to make teddies a year ago and got more and more absorbed... As my interest grew so did my collection of bearmaking-books. Of all my books this one is my absolute favorite. The pictures alone would get you started right away! It describes everything into the smallest detail, gives excellent tips and containes beautiful patterns.

Best for Bearmakers
Bearmaking 101 is an EXCELLENT book. I have been making jointed Teddies for many, many years and I find this book a MUST for any bearmakers complete library. Illustrations are clear. Instructions are easy using both inches and millimeters. She illustrates sizes with phrases such as "using the size of a U.S. nickel". Pictures are brilliant. With this book, you will be making a wonderful bear in no time. Unlike other artists' books, Carol-Lynn Rossel Waugh puts the tools and materials section in the back of the book. Be sure to check this out before you start your bear. Buy THIS book. You won't be sorry
